BMW showed the world that there was a different formula to the traditional sports car, especially that you could make one that was eco-friendly, fuel-efficient, and packing hybrid technology.

The stunning spaceship looks of the i8, coupled with trick butterfly doors mean that it looks like something from outer space. This 2019 BMW i8 Roadster is the drop-top variant that was introduced in 2018. The Sophisto Grau Brilliant exterior gives the car a stealthy and slightly menacing outlook. It’s also got the Lighting Package, and the piercing BMW Laserlight system that can light up the darkest of roads. 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels are its shoes, shod in tires that are narrower than you’d expect, with 215-section front tires and 245-section rear tires. The convertible top is in black. The gray interior is spaceship-esque too. While the i8 coupe can seat up to four occupants, albeit the rear seats are best for children, the Roadster is strictly an affair for two. You get a host of tech toys, including dual-zone climate control, digital instrument cluster, touch-screen infotainment system with BMW iDrive and Apple CarPlay, heads-up display, Harman/Kardon hi-fi sound system, BMW Driving Assistant, and Park Distance Control as some of the highlights.

Engine

This 2019 BMW i8 Roadster eschews the expected large-displacement internal combustion engine of at least 8 cylinders that a car of this ilk should pack. Instead, there’s an electric motor driving the front wheels, and a mid-mounted 1.5L three-cylinder BMW TwinPower turbocharged engine sending drive to the rear wheels via a six-speed ZF automatic gearbox. The combined system output is a heady 369hp and 420lb-ft, enabling a low-four second zero to sixty sprint time, and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. The i8 Roadster can also drive for up to 18 miles on electricity alone, at speeds of up to 75mph. Three driving modes are available, ECO PRO, COMFORT and SPORT, which tailor aspects of the drivetrain and steering accordingly.
